Get to Know: jb0xtchi

In anticipation of this week's print release with artist jb0xtchi, we sat down with her to learn about her life, art and much more.  Take a look below:

Where were you born and where are you now?

Born in Hong Kong, raised in Australia :)

What are your earliest artistic memories?

Drawing prawns and bamboo in calligraphy with ink.

How has your style evolved over the years and who/what have been some of your biggest influences along the way?

It definitely has gotten more detailed, especially my line work. I also like to think my choice of colors and composition has evolved in some way as well.

Some of my biggest art influences at the moment are James Jean, Yuko Higuchu and Yoshitomo Nara. I am also constantly inspired by my cats and other animals.

Could you tell us a bit about your release with us this week, "The Gala?"

“The Gala” is a very special artwork to me. It symbolizes growth and interaction with others. It is also a piece where I wanted to push myself in terms of colors, number of elements and the use of a new medium. The use of gouache enabled me to create a super bright and fun piece which I am really happy with.

What's a normal day like for you in the studio?

A normal day is checking emails and packing orders in the morning. After some quality cat time, I either sketch ideas for new pieces or continue working on existing work.

What's the hardest part of creating?

Staying motivated and productive.

Do your characters in your work all exist together in an artistic universe or is each piece in its own world?

I like to think of them as all in the same universe or at least connected in some way.

When you're not in your studio, what do you get up to?

I like to go outside for brunch sometimes but to be honest, I hardly leave the house since I love staying at home.

What can we look forward to from you next in 2021?

I have some super exciting stuff coming up that I can’t wait to share later, so stay tuned!

"The Gala" will be released on Thursday, May 27th at 1PM Pacific.
