Get to Know: Kaethe Butcher.

Get to Know: Kaethe Butcher.

In anticipation of tomorrow's limited edition print release with artist Kaethe Butcher, we sat down with her to learn about her work, her release with us and more.  Read the interview below.

Where were you born and where do you live now?

I was born in Leipzig (a smaller city in the east of Germany) and since this August I actually moved from London back here, although I kinda always said I would never come back - it’s been a crazy year haha.

What are your first artistic memories?

Drawing the bra of Ariel The Little Mermaid over and over again ....

Have you always dealt with the same subject matter in your work?

Kind of, yes. It always has been about feelings, love and how to deal with intimacy (and chasing after intimate moments and special connections).

Could you tell us a bit about your release with us, "I Can See In Double Vision Lately?"

The initial inspiration was a combination between my inability to make decisions and the lyrics of the song Enemy by Mystery Skulls (especially the title's inspired by these lyrics).  It is probably about this second person inside you (everyone knows one way or the other), the one that whispers strange things inside your head, makes your vision blurry, hinders your ability to decide things... It is like your shadow personality: it is growing inside you and if you are not careful enough it becomes bigger, growing towards the outside and becomes you. Well, a bit too dark maybe, but that's quite the essence it haha.

What's a normal day in the studio like for you?

My studio is in a corner in my room. To be honest, I do not have a normal working routine at the moment - working on that. It's hard, however some routines are a good thing.

What's the most difficult part of creating?

To start creating.

What's the most rewarding part of creating?

To keep creating - even when it sucks, even when you are unsure of the outcome. To see the finished work is very rewarding, especially when you took some risks to get there.

When you're not in the studio, what do you find yourself doing?

Sleeping. Hell, I do love a good sleep or nap. Just letting your thoughts drift away to places you haven't been before. Other than that, going for a walk, eating too much chocolate and trying to keep up to date with friends.

What can we look forward to from you in 2021?

Just a lot of new illustrations (hopefully).

Kaethe's limited edition print, "I Can See in Double Vision Lately," will be available in our shop Thursday, December 17th at 1PM Pacific.
